WAR DIARY - OCTOBER 1944 (Cont.)

                   October 14:

Steaming as before in area to eastward of Formosa. 0610 Carriers launched fighter sweep against Formosa. 0730 TOMASKVIC Cyril Stephen, 724 68 68, Cox, V-6, USNR, was washed overboard while restoring  gear in 40mm radar room on port side of ship below forward 40mm's. A careful search of the area failed to find man who was no seen by anyone aboard ship after his being washed over the side.  Commanding Officer's report, File P6/A17/MM, Serial 220 of October 1944. 1130 Set course 135 degrees(t), speed 24 knots, proceeding to fueling rendezvous with TG,,30.8 to eastward of Luzon. 1540 'dent t general quarters-when group of 14 enemy planes were contacted approaching formation from 030 degrees (t), 35 miles. CAP shot down 11 enemy plane and surface units of TG 38.2 accounted for 2 others. No damage reported to our surface units. 1705 Went. to general quarters when group of 10 to 12 enemy torpedo planes attacked formation from 130 degrees This ship destroyed one "Judy" by 40MM fire and assisted in the destruction of a second "Judy". Jap plane made suicide dive on USS RENO causing slight damage to stern and six men slightly burned. of this Task Group shot down many planes. (See Action Report of thi vessel, Serial 076 of October l6, 1944)* Damage to USS RENO was on damage suffered by surface units of this formation. Bogeys were reported intermittently during the night. Proceeding to fueling rendezvous to northeast of Luzon.

October 15:

Steaming as before proceeding to fueling rendezvous with TG 30,8. Intermittent contacts with enemy planes reported during, t night, none of which closed formation. 0305 USS INDEPENDENCE night fighter shot down Emily 2400(t), 33 miles from formation. 0810 Effected rendezvous with TG 30.8, began fueling operations. 1305 Fueled from USS PECO's, USS PRITCHETT detached, proceeding to lvlanus with fueling group for repairs. 2000 Set course 330 degrees (t), speed 23 knots, conducting long range search for units of Japanese Fleet reported heading for crippled USS CANBERRA and USS HOUSTON group.

October 16:

-Steaming as before conducting long range search for unit of Jap Fleet and attempting to out Jap Fleet off from home ports During the day search planes shot down 14 Japanese planes of various types while conducting sector searches for units of enemy fleet.
